Welcome to the Film Gourmand, which addressed to Fans and Cinema Experts!

It is well known that the cinema is on an art and business joint. We label ourselves as those who consider that the cinema is, first of all, a kind of art. It means that art advantages of a film, opinion of spectators, experts, estimations of colleagues on film production, etc. are more significant for us than various commercial indicators like box-offices, expenses for production and promotion and so on. Accordingly, on our site we talk about those films which are recognised as the best products of motion picture arts. No matter, yesterday these films were made or half a century ago. Moreover, in our opinion, the real masterpieces in every kind of art, including arts of the cinema, are not subject to time. Who will say that Bach, Mozart or Beethoven's music has become outdated and concedes to products of modern composers? Who will say that Titian, Raphael, Rembrandt or Van Gogh's canvases lose to pictures of modern artists? Who will say that sculptures of modern sculptors are of great value than creations of Michelangelo, Rodin or Miron? But we are not going to assert at all that old is always better than new. Simply we believe that in any art, and at cinema as well, time is required to estimate the real value of masterpiece. But many web-sites offer lists of «the best films» which contain fresh enough pictures going at cinemas which art advantages are sometimes rather doubtful. Unlike them our site is not engaged in promotion of the films which art value had not become commonly recognised yet.

Speaking about the best films, we bring at once to your attention the list of 1,000 greatest films of all times and all countries. We are perfectly informed that many various magazines, advertising agencies and simple enthusiasts of cinema publish a set of lists of the best, good, great films. But we believe, and even are convinced that our list is the most objective. You can find an explanation of the reasons of such our conviction in our comprehensive Movie Rating Methodology. It is quite probable that you offer your own methodology of ranging which will raise objectivity of definition of the best films. We will be glad to publish your reasons on this theme at The Movie Blog. For this purpose we specially get a category of Cinema and Ratings.

Except the general list of 1,000 greatest films on The Film Gourmand you can find also lists of the best films in different genres, the countries, decades.

Needless to say, we offer you not only to familiarise with lists of good films, but also and possibility to share the opinion concerning cinema. For example, you can tell about the favourite films. For this purpose we have got a category Favourite movies. You can also tell about films, which, in your opinion, have not received the deserved recognition at general public and film experts. Perhaps, any events in life surrounding you will cause in you associations with that or other film, and you will want to share the thoughts about it. And for such a case we provide a category Movie inspired. Don’t forget to check out it. Eventually, you can simply offer your own category, and we will be very glad to it.

So come in and make yourself at home. Read, write, share the opinion, ask questions. The Film Gourmand is created for these purposes.

“And when he had opened The Fifth Seal, I saw under the altar, the souls of them that were slain for the word of God and for the testimony which they held: And they cried with a loud voice, O Lord, holy and true, dost thou not judge and avenge our blood on them that dwell on earth.

Bless the Beasts & Children

By Film Gourmand

… One more obviously underappreciated film. I have watched this movie for the first time when I was in the age of heroes of a picture. Probably, therefore I felt myself to be intimate with them. And also may be because in each of them I has found, may be very small, but a part of myself: I am also not absolut…

Five Huge Reasons It’s A Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World

By Phillip Butler

I remember when I was 8 years old there was this movie, It’s a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World, starring Spencer Tracy and an all-star cast. The zany comedy, a rambling epoch of slapstick errors and twists, it’s a bit of vintage Americana now.

Burnt by the Sun 2

By Film Gourmand

To tell the truth, I was not going to write about «Burnt by the Sun 2». Film is absolutely new, spectators’ ratings – there is no place more low. Moreover, I was not going to watch it the nearest five years because its author – Nikita Mikhalkov – has declared that this movie is “long-playing masterpiec…
