Great films differ from insignificant movies that it is possible to watch them repeatedly, and each time they will give rise to the new thoughts, the new associations, new feelings. This statement fully concerns Bernardo Bertolucci’s film «The Conformist».
The first time I have watched «The Conformist» in 70th years. During that time, a time of a cloudless, carefree youth, I absolutely was not interested in a political component of this film. I watched only a love triangle of Giulia (Stefania Sandrelli) – Marcello (Jean-Louis Trintignant) – Anna (Dominique Sanda). I admired two my favourite actresses. And for what a long time had fallen in soul their dance! And not only mine. I remember, how somewhere in the nineties the last century I somehow with someone stirred about cinema, and in conversation among favorite films have mentioned «The Conformist». My interlocutor has asked again: «It there where Stefania Sandrelli and Dominique Sanda dance?»
The only one of present who has considered that they should not dance, there was a fascist.
Strictly speaking, my and other spectators of this film of 70х years inattention to political and sexual aspects of this film is not only ours, spectators, fault. As it was found out today, the Soviet film service has thoroughly worked at castration of this film. 40 minutes of screen time have been cut out from it, and that remains after this surgical operation of, has been remounted with a view of the maximum approach of a plot of a film to its fable. Otherwise, it is possible to think, the Soviet cinema-goer would not understand anything.

When recently I watched this film again, I was constantly tormented with doubts: whether that, whether not that. And nevertheless – that! A true masterpiece will not be spoiled by any reconfigurations! And dance of two film stars still is fine!
But to feeling of delight by them were added both new thoughts, and new associations. First of all, how Marcello Clerici is similar to many our contemporaries and compatriots! Unless they are not recoloured, like the hero of Jean-Louis Trintignant, from communists into democrats?!
It is heard in this gesture: «It they who brawled in 90s … And I’m such warm and fuzzy …»
How hero of Jean-Louis Trintignant is similar to those who decides today destinies of Russia! You do not find? And the most important thing about what it is impossible to forget: in the essence, in depths of the soul of Marcello Clerici the fascist. Unless is not present? The conclusion arises by itself.
